KALYDECO – (Ivacaftor)

Kalydeco is a medicine used to treat cystic fibrosis, an inherited disease that severely affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs. Kalydeco contains the active substance ivacaftor. Ivacaftor acts at the level of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator, a protein that forms a channel on the cell surface that allows particles such as chloride to enter and leave the cell. Due to mutations in the CFTR gene, chloride movement is reduced in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Ivacaftor helps certain abnormal CFTR proteins to open more frequently to improve the movement of chloride into and out of the cell.
